Based on the metamorphosis of an object expanded in time-space under a speculative combination of past and future. For example, if you move from your desk to visit a peer's desk on the side, your movement only takes about 3-5 seconds, but if we stretch it to 300 years. The motion is so slow that it becomes the object itself. Stitching different time dimensions onto an object has been a critical sculpting technique to achieve the visual style of the lamp.
Crafted in collaboration with Benjamin Elmer
The lamp of Prometheus started as a visual study under the guidance of Instructor William Virgil and Rachael McCall with TA KristoffFink. The process involves photogrammetry and 3d scanning, sculpting, modelling, compositing, rendering and 3d printing the physical lamp using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). When thin, it's flexible enough for hinges and springs, and when thick, it's strong enough for structural components. The images below are a culmination of the renders and the actual pictures of the displayed product.
The sequences of techniques experimented here challenge the contemporary issues of the speed at which we consume media and how the media and medium of cultural production can lighten up or distort a narrative. High-speed virtual overload and digital saturation have been compared with slow readings, revealing detailed material investigation, high-fidelity geometry, and texture.
The project was available on display throughout the third week of November 2022 at SCI-Arc.
